Visually and symbolically, “Sankofa” is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. The Amenyo Foundation looks to the future while respecting the cultures of those with whom we collaborate.

In 1999 Jim and Marcia Christensen, founders of Amenyo Foundation, began their work in Kpenoe, Ghana, West Africa. Jim and Marcia's philosophy for their mission was, and is, that people are basically good and that the best way to help people is to make it easier for that good to be put into practice. The key to the success of the mission has been to find out what the people of Kpenoe feel they need and then work to help them to achieve it. Since the beginning, the Christensens and now Amenyo Foundation have been raising funds for the work in Kpenoe and, as time progressed, in Ho, Ghana. Amenyo Foundation does development work and provides scholarships for deserving students who would, otherwise, have no hope of getting an education in the small village of Kpenoe. It also works to help local villagers to develop better health care and facilities. Many groups have been taken to Ghana by the Christensens to help in the work of the Amenyo Foundation and to be inspired to do more upon return to the USA.

You can be confident that funds you donate to Amenyo will, in part, effect lasting and permanent change in the lives of deserving Kpenoe students and that those students will go on to give back to their communities as adults. The work of Amenyo Foundation is possible through the support of likeminded donors. Please consider joining the effort.
